Downy Yellow Violet

(Photo taken 3/27/08)

Downy Yellow Violet (Viola pensylvanica)

From Missouri Wildflowers:

Flowering: March - May.

Habitat: On rich wooded slopes, thickets.

Origin: Native to U.S.

Other info: You can't miss this plant in the wild. Like most of the Violets, it blooms early and shows up well against the dark forest floor. The corolla is yellow which makes for easy identification in the wild.

Range: Throughout most of central and eastern U. S. (Please see USDA distribution map for details.)

We saw some of these today too. They are such a cheerful spot of color in the forest.

Really nice photo. Thanks for sharing this gem.

The range map show all of Texas, but I don;t believe I have seen one. I guess I will have to look harder.

I see spring is busting out all over down there. I've been having problems keeping up with changes here. And just this morning I saw the first flower on my property: a cultivated one (and believe me, that's a miracle!) but it is here. I saw the first wildflower down at a lower elevation this week. What beautiful flowers you ahve!
