Zebra Swallowtail (Eurytides marcellus)

My world is becoming repopulated with butterflies like this Zebra Swallowtail (Eurytides marcellus). This is the spring form of this butterfly. The summer form is darker. (Photo here.)

Range: Primarily the southeastern United States. More uncommon in the northeast. Occasionally makes it as far north as southern Ontario.

Food: Adults take nectar from flowers and also take fluids from damp ground, as the butterfly in the photo above is doing. The larvae host plant is Pawpaw.

This is beautiful. We had our first butterfly of the season yesterday. It as either a comma or questionmark. It didn't sit still long enough for me to see and of course I had no camera in my hand.

I saw a butterfly flit briefly by the window last week but could not identify. We do not have this lovely fellow, only the tigers, which are equally lovely. Thanks for the photo.

What a beauty. Love the red spots near the tail end. It would freeze up here today. We've got snow once again!

Great photo! I've only seen this butterfly a couple of times at my property. I planted 3 Pawpaws 2 years ago in hopes of attracting these butterflies, but so far they haven't found my trees.. Maybe this year!
