Please Tell Me Why

Hardly a growing season day passes without Jo and I cussing or discussing cottontail rabbits. We are either complaining about the veggies they've eaten or plotting strategies to keep them from eating our produce.

So why are we letting this nest of bunnies Jo found while weeding continue living in our strawberry bed? Evidently, rationality (and, perhaps, even sanity) isn't one of our strong points.

Friday Flashbacks

Events from this week in year's past.
(Not too many years past, just as long as we've owned a digital camera.)

2006:

Snakes were breeding. (I guess they're breeding.)

Jo found a viscous, man-eating cottontail in our weed-filled strawberry bed. (Jo's photo)

We discovered a fairly large snapping turtle migrating across our upper pasture. (Jo's photo)

Spiderworts bloomed. (I haven't seen any spiderworts in bloom yet this year.) (Jo's photo)

2007:

A luna moth hung out on the clothesline. (I haven't seen one of these yet in 2008.)

A male carpenter bee prepared to do a little nectar robbing on a narcissus while a wasp made its way into the bloom. (Narcissus are just now budding this year.)

Friday, 6/29/07

Rabbit: After three attempt, I finally succeeded in herding this cottontail under the electric fence (which is off) and out of our garden.

Trip Into Town: I made a trip into town today. That's not among my favorite things to do, but we needed groceries -- and it was my turn. Going into town is not Jo's favorite thing to do either. I made a few other routine stops in addition to buying groceries, including filling the van's gas tank. Gasoline is down to $2.89 per gallon.

Rain: I drove through a brief, but heavy, shower just outside of town. I expected it to be just an isolated shower, but the pavement was wet -- and steaming -- all the way out to the house. At home, we'd received just enough rain to get everything good and wet. I thought things might dry off enough for me to mow and/or work in the garden, but then we received another shower, bringing our rainfall total to only .1" but discouraging work outside in the wet grass.

Didn't Happen: The momentous event that did not happen today was that I did not rush out and buy an iPhone.
