Computer Problems

Sorry for my abrupt departure and absence. Briefly, the hard drive on my computer is failing. Substandard mechanical performance was announced by a screen upon start up and confirmed by running Dell's 90/90 diagnostics analysis of the hard drive. Because I have been very negligent in backing up my system, I ordered and external hard drive, then shut down my computer until receiving it. I've now got everything backed up in a variety of different ways ranging from a full image of my boot drive to individual copies of important files and folders.

The old hard drive is still working, but as I understand it, could crash at any time. I don't see any reason to wait for the crash, especially since the backed up copy of my drive will become out of date and need to be redone. I've got a replacement hard drive ordered and it should arrive on Friday (2/22). I plan on installing the new drive and re-installing Widows and my files upon arrival. I've never done any of this before, so wish me luck.

There you are! I was starting to worry! Sorry about the comp troubles. Good luck with the new hard drive. It probably won't be as hard as you think.

Oh mercy Marvin. What a kick in the computer. I wish you the best of luck. I would be sweating bullets. I have a difficult time changing the ink cartridge on my printer let alone attempting what you have to look forward to. Good to hear you are healthy.

I've been wondering where you've been... Thought you were vacationing or something.

I understand your grief!!! Last summer I needed the motherboard replaced on a new laptop. It was awful.

I hope you get things squared away without any headaches...

My laptop's hard-drive failed last spring. It got slower and slower and Dell Diagnostics indicated several bad sectors on the disk so I replaced the drive myself.

I had to make a phone call to Microsoft to get my copy of XP re-activated after changing the drive.

I pretty much followed the same course you are taking. There were times I broke out in a cold sweat, but everything came out o.k. in the end.

Glad to have you back Marvin..
As for the hard drive the only thing I can say is that on the back should be some connection called jumpers... make sure it is set to Master and not Slave.. Loading windows and other stuff should be OK with the correct disks.
In the mean time go to something like a PC Advisor site and read up on installing a new harddrive.. if need be print the topics out.
Good luck with it all I wish you well.

Luck! Luck! Luck! But I'm glad you were able to tell us what happened. Isn't it awful when we find ourselves "dead in the water," as to our computer or to blogging? Yish...

I've been this way, with blogging a couple of times in a few days. And I am sick of it. Grrrrrrrrrrr...

More luck, luck, to you!!!
