Mantidflies are a case of convergent evolution where two different groups independently developed the same characteristics. (It's also a case of a confusing common name.) Mantidflies are more closely related to ant lions, lacewings and the like than they are to true mantids.

I have not seen this ill looking mantid. Ill looking in that I am used to seeing the Green ones. Interesting.
