Bobwhite Quail

Why this female bobwhite quail was sitting on our porch steps around eight o'clock Sunday evening, I do not know, but she was. And, she allowed me to take several photos before tiring of my nonsense and flying off into the darkness.

I suspect she was there for whatever warmth is available. Nice shot.

Whoa. You have bobwhites? Damn. They're virtually extirpated in PA.

It is funny that you should post this today. We saw several female quail sitting in some grass in the sun yesterday. Our first sighting of the year. They were quite content lying in the grass. It was a miracle we spotted them they blended in so well. They wouldn't let my DB get close enough for a good photo. They skittered away when he tried to get close to them.

Wow.....She is lovely! Fantastic Capture! Hopefully she'll have plenty of little "baby bobwhites" and there will be more for you to enjoy!

You lucky man. I love the quail family. I used to have button quail. Keep her warm.

I haven't saw a bob-white here in Pa for around 30 years, and nobody knows why they.
Interesting post on the dillers, Maybe I'll see one around these parts someday.

I know what you mean, Lisa. We've seen quail on our place many times, but 19 times out of 20, we flush the covey. (Our dogs are definitely not pointers.) On the rare occasion when we do see the bobwhites on the ground, we cannot get nearly close enough to photograph with our camera.

We allegedly have bobwhites at a nearby nature center, but it's so sizeable we've never actually seen any. I used to raise bobwhites (& others,) up in Canada. The babies are tremendously precious...Little puffballs with relatively large feet. Regardless of when the eggs are laid, once in the incubator, they'll all hatch at the same time. Pretty cool, that!

Such a cute Bob-white! Also, one who has not seen any in a very long time! Those I probably have seen were released birds !

Wonderful photo!

I saw them frequently when I started photographing wildlife in 1974, but I have not seen one for several years now.

Hi Marvin,
She is a beauty! I have never seen Bob-whites in my backyard. Once in awhile I will hear them if we are out in the country. Having one on the back step is very special. I have always thought the Bob-white means "watch out for danger." this one was comfortable with you.
Nice picture!
Glad you were safe during the storms on Tuesday.

omg how lucky you were! What a beauty! You took such great advantage of this because the photo is wonderful. Now tell me how to lure them to my stoop!

These are rare birds in this part of the country, although I heard them calling in Tennessee. I love it when nature blesses us with these moments :)

Great that you have quail...feral cats often decimate their truly wild populations, and all you have left are captive-raised that were released for hunting. I saw a chukar in my yard once, and since it's not even native to this country, I knew it was hunting stock. Still beautiful and exciting to have around, but I felt a bit sad that it was the "only one", with no wild friends.
