Baffled -- Not!

You just cannot baffle the squirrels when they can jump straight up and grab the bottom of the log-type feeder. (Photos from Saturday.)

Bits and Pieces over the past few days:

Friday evening and most of the day Saturday it rained. We picked up another 2.25 inches, giving us a total of around five inches of rain for the week. The pond is looking in a lot better shape now. Fortunately, very little precipitation fell after our temperature dropped below freezing Saturday night. No snow, sleet or icing.

We've been battling with a bad telephone connection for several days. Sometimes, no phone. Most of the time, the computer wouldn't stay connected. Every once and a while, things worked fine. I was convince the telephone company had a problem up the line somewhere. I was totally wrong -- again. We have a shorted line in the house.

I really wanted to replace that telephone line Monday, but the dogs said we should go cut more firewood instead. Rusty and Bucket insisted that it was rediculous to be crawling around in the attic on such a bright and sunny day. I removed the shorted line from the system so the other two lines worked and we cut more firewood.

It's either feast or famine...we can't coax any squirrels to set up housekeeping on our ridge. (Perhaps they suspect we want them for squrrel gravy.)

I didn't know there was any place in the woods that didn't have squirrels. Ours weren't such a problem until we became overprotective parents and stopped having an outside dog. Squirrel gravy remains an option.

Your work sure shows in that stack of wood. It is cut and stacked so neat.

Thanks, Cathy. I love the look of stacked wood, and it's got to be relatively neat or else it isn't going to remained stacked very long. There's even more of it now, a little higher, large unsplit rounds stacked in front and the other rack is about half full.

those squirrels are soo tricky! My squirrel proof feeder works great but doesn't stop the raccoons!

Tom: We don't have a big problem with raccoons, but I can usually tell when one has visited because the birdfeeders are on the ground.

Sorry about the phone & squirrel problems. Good work on the firewood, though!

Lana: I keep hoping that if I accumulate enough firewood it will reach critical mass and become self-generating. Hasn't happened yet, though.

It is me again.

I can tell you that I have fiddle-farted around trying to keep the squirrels from getting in the bird seed for the past 45 years and came up with several Rube Golberg devices that worked but ,,, well. I also found a device that really works. Trouble is you got to hand the feeder from a tree. Squirrels are at home in trees. So you need a long bungee cord and attach it to a tree lim up high and let it hang down so that it is several feet from the tree trunk. Then it should be about 5 feet above the ground or more. I then went to Tractor Supply and bought a round, metal lid or a thing that looks like a lid. It is painted green and had a hole in the middle. You get a hook to go through the hole into a nut and the bottom hook threads into that. So the lid is hooked on to the bungee cord and under the lid is the other hook for your bird feeder to hook onto. Now the squirrel can come down the bungee cord but can't get over the lid as it is about 24 inches in diameter. If he goes out on the edge to look over the whole thing tilts and he falls off. And if it is high enough he can't jump up from the ground and get it.

I have two and no squirrels have figured out how to get past them.

Abraham: It sounds like you've got a good design. The problem is: We don't have a suitable tree near where we want to hang the feeders.

The squirrels laugh heartily at me...

They are not bothering the feeders now but they put me in the poor house Spring & Summer :o) Baffles don't work.

Your rain will produce a beautiful spring. Send some here.

Mary: We are due more rain on Saturday. I will try to send some your direction, but will probably be no more successful than I am at putting my fat and sassy squirrels on a diet.

Heh...be it by baffle or gravy, I say you WILL be victorious! Just gotta be more stubborn than the varmints are! ;-)

Lisa: I could give a mule lessons on being stubborn - just ask my wife.
